Setanta development row: €400,000 meet €8.3 million – and that is before the lawyers get paid

The row between the Goodman Group and the Kilkenny shop shows the enormous costs of High Court litigation – and just how wide apart expert opinions can be.

It is a question of scale, proportion: and that is only in respect of the finances, never mind the design.  

The total cost to the Goodman group of building an eight-storey office block at the Setanta Centre on Nassau Street is being billed at €150 million. The price tag for complying with discovery orders in a legal row with its tenant the Kilkenny shop arising from the proposed revamp could be as high as €8.3 million, the Commercial Court has heard. 

And that figure only covers the cost of searching for documents required by Kilkenny before the trial begins. It does not include lawyers’ fees.
