On September 14, Northern Ireland’s Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon granted planning permission for the northern portion of the north-south interconnector, a 138-km high-voltage power line from Co Meath to Co Tyrone designed to triple the capacity for the Republic and the North’s grids to exchange electricity across the border. Stormont’s clearance for the interconnector comes after a decade of legal wrangling triggered by thousands of objections.
